Cursor vs Claude Code at a glance
When you compare Cursor vs Claude Code, the core difference is how you pay for Anthropic's models. Claude Code bundles Claude usage into a $20 monthly subscription, while Cursor charges API list price for Claude on its $30 Premium tier and up and runs only Cursor's own models, such as Grok, on its cheaper plans.

What Claude costs in each
Claude Code comes with a paid Claude subscription, and every prompt you run counts against that plan's weekly usage limits. Claude Pro costs $20 a month (or $17 a month when billed yearly at $200 up front), while heavy users can step up to Max 5x at $100 a month or Max 20x at $200 a month for 5x or 20x the Pro usage. For teams, standard Claude Team seats start at $20 per seat a month billed yearly ($25 monthly), and premium seats with 5x the usage of standard seats cost $100 per seat a month billed yearly ($125 monthly).
In Cursor, Claude models are billed separately from your subscription because third-party models sit outside the included usage pool. You first need a Cursor Premium plan at $30 a month (or Super at $100, or Ultra at $200), and then every Claude request bills from prepaid credit at API list price per 1M tokens: Claude Opus 5.5 costs $4 input and $20 output, Claude Sonnet 5.5 is $2 input and $10 output, and Claude Fable 5.1 runs $10 input and $50 output.
On Cursor Plus ($8) and Cursor Free ($0), you can't select Claude models or bring your own API keys at all.
Models and benchmark scores
- On Vals AI's Terminal-Bench 4.0 (October 29, 2026), Cursor's included Grok 4.7 scores 28.79%, compared to 65.15% for Claude Opus 5.5.
- On Vals AI's Vibe Code Bench v1.1 for building web apps from scratch, Cursor's Composer 2.5 scores 49.61%, while Claude Sonnet 5.5 reaches 92.39% (with Claude Opus 5.5 at 90.29% and Grok 4.7 at 86.17%).
- Cursor's included usage pool covers only Grok 4.7, Grok 4.6, Grok 4.5 and Composer 2.5, so choosing Claude, GPT or Gemini directly costs extra at API list rates on Premium and higher plans (Cost mode requests still draw from the pool, whichever model serves them).
- OpenAI announced on August 28, 2026 that it will wind down its contract supplying models to Cursor, with a proposed shutoff date of November 12, 2026.
Workflow: editor vs agent
Cursor centers your work inside its own editor, where you use Agent, Chat and Tab completion side by side, plus a CLI for terminal tasks. If you pay for Premium ($30) or higher, you also get Cloud Agents, Automations, code hosting on Origin, and Bugbot code review.
Claude Code works as an agent you hand tasks to directly in the terminal CLI, or through its VS Code extension, JetBrains plugin, desktop app, web app at claude.ai/code, mobile app, Slack, or CI runners in GitHub Actions and GitLab CI. Every surface reads the same CLAUDE.md file, settings and MCP servers, so your project context stays put when you switch between your terminal and your IDE.
Which one to pick
- Pick Claude Code on Claude Pro ($20) or Max ($100 or $200) if you want Claude Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 without paying per-token API bills on top of your subscription.
- Pick Cursor Plus at $8 a month if you want a dedicated AI editor with Tab completion at the lowest monthly price and you're fine sticking to Cursor's own models, such as Grok 4.7, at fixed settings.
- Pick Claude Code's VS Code or JetBrains extension if you want Claude inside an editor under a flat subscription, or pick Cursor Premium ($30) if you want Cursor's interface and don't mind paying API list prices per token for Claude.
- Look for a Cursor alternative if your workflow depends on OpenAI models, since OpenAI has a proposed November 12, 2026 shutoff for supplying its models to Cursor (and Claude Code runs Claude models only).
Use your Claude plan inside Cursor
Cursor's own-key setting on Premium ($30) and higher plans lets you enter an OpenAI API key and override the OpenAI base URL. When you use a custom base URL, Cursor routes those chat requests through its own servers, so the endpoint you point it to has to be publicly reachable on the internet.
If you connect your Claude Pro or Max account to Plan2API, you can paste your p2a_ key and set the base URL to https://api.plan2api.com/v1 in Cursor's API settings to run models like claude/claude-opus-5-5 in Cursor chat with no per-token bill from Plan2API. Your own-key requests don't draw from Cursor's weekly usage pool on individual plans (Teams and Enterprise pay Cursor's $0.25 per 1M token rate on eligible models), while Tab completion keeps running on Cursor's built-in models, and Plan2API Free covers 1 connected subscription with up to 50 chat requests a day for $0.
Use the AI subscriptions you already pay for as one OpenAI-compatible API key.
- Free: 1 subscription, 50 requests a day, no card
- Pro: $12 a month
FAQ
Does Cursor include Claude?
No, Claude models aren't part of Cursor's included usage pool on any tier. On Premium ($30 a month) and higher, you can run Claude models by paying API list price from prepaid credit, such as $4 input and $20 output per 1M tokens for Claude Opus 5.5. Cursor Free and Plus ($8) don't give you access to third-party models at all.
Is Claude Code cheaper than Cursor for Claude?
Yes, if you use Claude regularly, Claude Pro gives you Claude Code access for $20 a month ($17 a month billed yearly) with usage included up to the plan's weekly limit. In Cursor, getting access to Claude starts with the $30 monthly Premium fee, and every Claude prompt still bills per token at API list rates on top of that.
Who owns Cursor now?
SpaceX acquired Cursor's parent company, Anysphere, in August 2026. Since then, Cursor plans are sold by X Subscription Corp as part of The X Subscription, which bundles Grok, Cursor and X into one plan, with one weekly usage pool shared across Cursor and Grok.
Will GPT models stay in Cursor?
Not through Cursor's own model supply. OpenAI announced on August 28, 2026 that it's winding down its contract to supply models to Cursor after the SpaceX acquisition. The proposed shutoff date is November 12, 2026, and Cursor may end access to OpenAI models even sooner. OpenAI's help page points to your own OpenAI API key, the Codex IDE extension or an OpenAI-compatible gateway as ways to keep using its models.
Can I use my Claude subscription in Cursor?
Not directly, because Cursor's built-in Anthropic key field requires a billed Anthropic API key rather than a Claude Pro or Max login. However, if you're on Cursor Premium or higher, you can connect your Claude Pro or Max plan to Plan2API and use Cursor's OpenAI base URL override with https://api.plan2api.com/v1 to run your subscription inside Cursor chat.
