Claude usage limits
Claude usage limits: 5-hour sessions and weekly caps
Claude Pro and Max have two usage limits: a session limit that resets every 5 hours and a weekly limit that resets at a fixed time set for your account. Max 5x gets 5x Pro's usage per session and Max 20x gets 20x. Chat, Claude Desktop and Claude Code all draw from the same limits.

Claude usage limits by plan
Every paid Claude plan except usage-based Enterprise has both a 5-hour session limit and a weekly limit. Instead of giving a fixed message count, Anthropic states Max's allowance as a multiple of what you get on Pro.
| Plan | Price | Usage per 5-hour session | Weekly limit | Claude Fable |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly ($200 up front) | Base allowance | Yes, across all models | Usage credits only |
| Max 5x | $100 a month | 5x Pro | Yes, across all models | Up to 50% of weekly limit |
| Max 20x | $200 a month | 20x Pro | Yes, across all models | Up to 50% of weekly limit |
How the 5-hour and weekly limits work
The session limit resets every five hours. Your weekly limit applies across all models and resets once a week at a fixed day and time assigned to your account, which you can check any time in Settings > Usage.
Anthropic doesn't publish message counts because how fast you burn through a limit depends on the length and complexity of the conversation, the features you use, the model, and the effort level. With the Claude Opus 5.5 launch on September 22, 2026, Anthropic increased the five-hour usage limits on Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans.
Usage on claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code all counts toward the same session and weekly pool, so a long coding run eats into what you have left for regular chat.
Fable limits on Pro and Max
- On Max, Claude Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 can use up to 50% of your weekly usage limit at no extra cost. That 50% is pulled straight from your regular weekly allowance rather than added on top, and Fable burns through it faster than other models.
- Once you hit that Fable share on Max, you can either keep going on usage credits or switch to another model for the rest of the week.
- On Pro (and standard Team seats), Fable isn't included in your plan's usage limits and runs on pay-as-you-go usage credits right from the first prompt, while the Free plan doesn't have Fable at all.
- If you're running Fable in Claude Code, you'll need version 2.1.170 or later for Fable 5, and version 2.1.255 or later for Fable 5.1.
Claude Code and your limits
- Claude Code prints warning messages in the terminal as you get close to a cap, and you can run
/statusat any point to see your remaining allocation. - If you hit the 5-hour limit in the middle of a response, a wrap-up allowance can let Claude Code keep working briefly, with a notice that it is wrapping up. This is rolling out gradually, and you get it up to once per weekly period on Pro, or each time you hit the 5-hour cap on Max (as long as you're still within your weekly limit).
- Watch out for your shell environment: if the
ANTHROPIC_API_KEYenvironment variable is set, Claude Code uses that key instead of your subscription and you pay API rates (see Claude Code pricing). - Max comes with monthly API credits ($100 a month on Max 5x, $200 on Max 20x), which you can claim after 7 days on the plan by linking a Claude Console organization, but they expire at the end of each billing cycle, don't cover interactive Claude Code or extra app usage, and don't change your plan's usage limits.
What to do when you hit a limit
- Open
Settings > Usageto see the exact reset time for your 5-hour session or weekly cap, and wait it out. - If you have a limit reset available on your account, click "Reset for free" in
Settings > Usageon the web or in Claude Desktop (it's not in the Claude Code terminal or on mobile) to set your 5-hour or weekly limit right back to full. Anthropic hands these out occasionally to eligible plans, including one given to subscribers with the Opus 5.5 launch on September 22, 2026 that you can save and use whenever you want. - Turn on usage credits in
Settings > Usageon Pro, Max 5x or Max 20x so your requests keep running pay-as-you-go at standard API rates after your 5-hour, weekly or Max Fable limit runs out. You can prepay funds, turn on auto-reload, and set a monthly spend limit so you don't get surprised by the bill. - Upgrade your subscription from Pro to Max 5x, or from Max 5x to Max 20x, and the higher limits kick in right away.
Spread your work across several Claude accounts
Plan2API lets you hook up your Claude Pro and Max accounts to a single OpenAI-compatible p2a_ API key using the Claude subscription API. Every request you send still runs on that connected account's own 5-hour and weekly limits, and Plan2API doesn't raise or remove Anthropic's caps.
- Each connected Claude account counts as one subscription when you connect your accounts: the Free plan connects 1 subscription for $0, Pro connects up to 3 for $12 a month, and Scale connects up to 25 for $29 a month.
- When you have more than one Claude account connected and a request hits one account's usage limit, Plan2API moves that request over to the next connected account before any output is sent.
- If every connected Claude account is out of quota at the same time, the API returns HTTP 429 with the error code
subscription_quota_exhaustedand aRetry-Afterheader in seconds showing the earliest reset.
Use the AI subscriptions you already pay for as one OpenAI-compatible API key.
- Free: 1 subscription, 50 requests a day, no card
- Pro: $12 a month
FAQ
How often do Claude usage limits reset?
The session limit resets every 5 hours. The weekly limit resets once a week at a fixed day and time assigned to your account, which you can check in Settings > Usage.
How many messages do I get on Claude Pro?
Anthropic doesn't give a fixed number because your usage depends on conversation length and complexity, the features you use, the model, and the effort level. If you need more room, Max 5x gives you 5x Pro's usage per session and Max 20x gives you 20x.
Do Claude Code and the Claude app share usage limits?
Yes. Everything you do in claude.ai, Claude Desktop, and Claude Code draws from the exact same 5-hour session and weekly limits.
Is there a separate Fable limit on Claude Max?
Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 can use up to 50% of your Max weekly limit at no extra cost, but that share comes out of your regular weekly limit rather than sitting on top of it. On Pro, Fable isn't part of the plan's limits at all and runs on usage credits from the start.
Can I keep using Claude after I hit the limit?
Yes, you can turn on usage credits in Settings > Usage to keep going at standard API rates, use a free limit reset if you have one sitting on your account, or upgrade your plan. Otherwise, you have to wait for the timer to reset.
Does Plan2API increase my Claude limits?
No, every request still runs against your connected accounts' own 5-hour and weekly limits. What Plan2API does is let you connect several Claude accounts behind one p2a_ key, so when a request hits one account's limit, it moves to the next connected account before any output is sent.
