Pro vs Max at a glance

Comparing Pro and Max comes down to a straight multiplier: Max 5x costs 5x Pro's price for 5x the per-session usage, while Max 20x gives 4x Max 5x's usage for 2x the price. Those $100 and $200 prices apply to web subscriptions, and mobile pricing may vary by app platform.

How much more usage Max gives

Max multiplies Pro's per-session allowance by 5 or 20 under the same system. The session limit resets every five hours, and a weekly limit across all models resets at a fixed time assigned to your account; Settings > Usage shows your next reset. Chat on web, desktop and mobile and Claude Code share that pool, with no fixed message count. Anthropic says it may also limit usage in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature usage. Anthropic pitches Max 5x at frequent users who work with Claude on a variety of tasks, and Max 20x at daily users who collaborate with Claude on most tasks.

When Anthropic launched Claude Opus 5.5 on September 22, 2026, it raised the five-hour session limits across Pro and Max. It also gave subscribers a limit reset they can save and use at any time to bring the five-hour session limit or the weekly limit back to full.

In Claude Code, reaching a five-hour session limit mid-response can trigger a small wrap-up allowance that finishes the step in progress: Pro gets it up to once per weekly usage period, while Max gets it each time it hits a five-hour limit, within the weekly limit. The allowance is still rolling out.

What Max adds besides usage

  • Max includes Claude Fable at 50% of your weekly limits, whereas Pro users can only run Fable by paying for extra usage credits.
  • Max 5x comes with $100 a month in API credits and Max 20x comes with $200, both claimable 7 days after you subscribe by linking a Claude Console organization under Settings > Billing > API credits.
  • Those monthly API credits pay for the Claude API, Claude Managed Agents, the Agent SDK, and the Console playground, but they cannot be used for Claude Code or extra usage in the Claude apps, and unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle with no rollover.
  • Both Max tiers have higher output limits for all tasks and priority access to new models, features and products.

Upgrading from Pro to Max

  • If you upgrade mid-cycle, Anthropic charges you on a prorated basis for the time left in your billing period, and if you've claimed your monthly API credits, a prorated batch lands right away before switching to the full $100 or $200 amount on your next cycle.
  • When you move from an annual Pro plan ($200 up front) to Max, any remaining balance on your annual plan that exceeds the Max price turns into account credit applied to your future subscription bills, provided your Max billing address matches the address on your previous subscription.
  • If you subscribed through Google Play, upgrading charges you the full price of the new Max tier immediately and converts the unused value of your old Pro plan into extra days on the new plan.

Which plan to pick

  • Pick Pro if you rely on Claude for daily chat and occasional Claude Code sessions, or if you want yearly billing at $17 a month ($200 up front) instead of the $20 monthly Pro price, since Max has no yearly billing.
  • Pick Max 5x ($100 a month) if you hit Pro's five-hour or weekly limits most weeks, or if you spend hours a day inside Claude Code and don't want to fall back on standard-rate usage credits.
  • Pick Max 20x ($200 a month) if you run all-day coding or agent sessions that outgrow Max 5x, or want more weekly room for Claude Fable.
  • If you're buying for 2 to 150 people, look at Claude Team Premium seats, which give 5x Team Standard usage for $100 a seat a month billed yearly or $125 billed monthly.

Several Claude accounts behind one key

If you already hold more than one Claude subscription, you can connect your accounts to Plan2API and route them behind a single OpenAI-compatible p2a_ API key at https://api.plan2api.com/v1, where each connected Claude account counts as one subscription. Plan2API does not raise any account's own usage limits or add token quota of its own; your Claude subscriptions keep their normal five-hour and weekly caps.

  • Plan2API's plans let you connect 1 subscription for $0 on Free (capped at 50 chat requests a day), 3 subscriptions for $12 a month on Pro ($99 a year), or 25 subscriptions for $29 a month on Scale ($249 a year).
  • When you have more than one Claude account connected, a request to POST /v1/chat/completions that hits one account's limit automatically moves to the next connected account before any output is sent.
  • Once every connected account is out of quota, the API returns HTTP 429 with the error code subscription_quota_exhausted and a Retry-After header in seconds pointing to the earliest reset.

Use the AI subscriptions you already pay for as one OpenAI-compatible API key.

  • Free: 1 subscription, 50 requests a day, no card
  • Pro: $12 a month

FAQ

Is Claude Max worth it?

It's worth it if you regularly run out of Pro quota and don't want to wait five hours for a reset or pay per token with usage credits. Max 5x gives you 5x Pro's per-session usage for $100 a month, and Max 20x gives you 20x Pro's usage for $200 a month, plus $100 or $200 a month in API credits if you also build on the Claude API.

Can I pay for Claude Max yearly?

No, Claude Max is billed monthly only. Yearly billing is available on Claude Pro ($200 a year, or $17 a month) and on Claude Team plans.

Does Claude Max include API credits?

Yes, Max 5x includes $100 a month in API credits and Max 20x includes $200 a month, which you can claim under Settings > Billing > API credits starting 7 days after you subscribe by linking a Claude Console organization. They cover the Claude API, Managed Agents, the Agent SDK, and the Console playground, but they expire at the end of every billing cycle with no rollover and can't pay for Claude Code.

Can I upgrade from Pro to Max mid-month?

Yes, upgrading from Pro to Max on the web is prorated for the rest of your current billing cycle. If you're coming off an annual Pro subscription and your remaining balance is higher than the Max monthly price, the leftover balance stays on your account as credit toward future subscription bills as long as you keep the same billing address.

Do Pro and Max have the same models?

Both Pro and Max include access to Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku models, along with Claude Code. The difference is Claude Fable: Max includes Fable at 50% of your weekly usage limits, while Pro users can only access Fable by turning on paid usage credits.

What is the difference between Max 5x and Max 20x?

The difference is the price, the session multiplier, and the monthly API credit grant: Max 5x costs $100 a month for 5x Pro's per-session usage and $100 in monthly API credits, while Max 20x costs $200 a month for 20x Pro's per-session usage (4x the usage of Max 5x for double the cost) and $200 in API credits. Both include Claude Code, Claude Fable at 50% of weekly limits and higher output limits.

Is there a discount on Claude Max?

No, there is no standing discount on Claude Max or Pro. Anthropic doesn't offer standard discounted pricing tiers, and while it occasionally runs limited-time promotions, Anthropic Support cannot issue one-off discounts or promotional coupons.
