Claude API vs subscription
Claude API or a Claude subscription: which costs less?
A Claude plan is cheaper for heavy daily use that fits its limits: 1M input and 200K output tokens a day on Opus 5.5 cost $240 a month at API prices ($4 in, $20 out per 1M), against $100 or $200 for Max, which also includes API credits equal to its price. The API wins for light use and apps that serve other people.
- Claude Pro
- $20 a month, no API use
- Claude Max
- $100 or $200 a month
- Max API credits
- Same as the plan price
- Opus 5.5 on the API
- $4 in, $20 out per 1M

What each option costs
The split is simple: a plan charges a flat monthly price with usage limits, while the API bills every input and output token you send. The table below lines up the two side by side, and you can check our full Claude API price list for every model tier.
On Pro and Max, your usage runs against a rolling 5-hour session limit and weekly limits, and Anthropic publishes no fixed message or token counts for either window. Anthropic's help center states that the Pro plan does not include API usage through the Claude Console. The API has no 5-hour window, but it sets rate limits and a monthly spend cap by usage tier: $500 on Start, $1,000 on Build, and $200,000 on Scale.
| Option | Price | Usage | Monthly API credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | $20 a month, or $17 billed annually | 5-hour session limit plus weekly limits | None |
| Max 5x | $100 a month | 5x Pro's usage, plus weekly limits | $100 |
| Max 20x | $200 a month | 20x Pro's usage, plus weekly limits | $200 |
| Claude API | Per token, Opus 5.5 $4 in, $20 out per 1M | Tier rate limits and a monthly spend cap | Not applicable |
A worked example
To put numbers on this, the table below takes a steady workload of 1M input and 200K output tokens a day at Claude API list prices with no caching or Batch discount, and shows how many days it takes to hit $100, the monthly price of Max 5x.
The catch is that Claude plan usage limits decide whether that workload actually fits inside a subscription. Anthropic publishes no token counts for the 5-hour and weekly windows, so checking Settings > Usage is the only way to see where you stand.
Two things lower the API side of the math. The Batch API takes 50% off input and output, and cache hits cost 10% of the input price on most models (5% on Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5, 2.5% on Fable 5.1), which matters for coding agents that resend long prompts on every turn.
Claude 4.7 and later models use a newer tokenizer that produces about 30% more tokens for the same text, so the same work counts more tokens on newer models.
| Model | API price per 1M (in / out) | Per day | Per 30 days | Days to reach $100 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fable 5.1 | $10 / | $20 | $600 | 5 |
| Opus 5.5 | $4 / | $8 | $240 | 12.5 |
| Opus 4.8 | $5 / | $10 | $300 | 10 |
| Sonnet 5.5 or Sonnet 5 | $2 / | $4 | $120 | 25 |
| Haiku 4.5 | $1 / | $2 | $60 | 50 |
When the API is the better choice
- You're building an app that serves other people, since Anthropic doesn't permit routing requests through Free, Pro, or Max plan credentials on behalf of users and asks developers to use API keys.
- Your usage is light or spiky enough that per-token billing stays under $20 a month.
- You need limits you can plan around, meaning tier rate limits and a monthly spend cap instead of 5-hour and weekly windows.
- Your work can run asynchronously through the Batch API at 50% off input and output prices.
- You need Claude through AWS, Google Cloud, or Microsoft Foundry.
When a subscription is the better choice
- You have heavy personal daily use that would cost more than the plan at API prices.
- You want a flat, known monthly cost with no per-token bill at the end of the month.
- Max 5x and Max 20x include $100 and $200 a month in Claude API credits, equal to the plan price, so Max costs nothing extra if you already spend that much on the API.
- Claude Code is included in every paid plan and shares the plan's usage limits.
- Claude Fable is included on Max 5x and Max 20x up to 50% of weekly limits, while Pro gets it only through usage credits.
- When you hit a limit, paid plans can turn on usage credits to keep working at standard API rates instead of stopping.
How Max's monthly API credits work
Max's monthly API credits are separate from the plan's own usage limits and go to a Claude Console organization.
- You can claim them after 7 days on the plan under Settings > Billing by linking a Claude Console organization.
- They cover the Claude API, Claude Managed Agents, the Claude Agent SDK, and the Console playground.
- They don't cover Claude Code, extra usage in the Claude apps, or Claude through AWS, Google Cloud, or Microsoft Foundry.
- Credits refresh each billing cycle, and any unused credits expire without rolling over.
- Team plans get $20 per Standard seat and $100 per Premium seat, pooled up to $500 a month, while Free, Pro, and Enterprise plans get none.
If an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set, Claude Code uses that key instead of your plan and you pay API rates.
Use your plan where an API is expected
A Claude plan has no API key of its own, so scripts and tools that expect an endpoint normally push you onto Console billing. Plan2API lets you turn your Claude subscription into an API by connecting your Pro or Max plan at plan2api.com/connect, which gives you an OpenAI-compatible p2a_ key for https://api.plan2api.com/v1 with 9 Claude models from Opus 5.5 to Haiku 4.5 running on your plan's own limits.
Plan2API adds no token quota of its own, moves a request to another connected Claude account before any output is sent if one hits its limit, and returns HTTP 429 subscription_quota_exhausted with a Retry-After header when every connected account is out. Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 aren't in its catalog.
Plan2API sends only your own requests through your own account, so Anthropic's rules still apply and any account risk stays with you. Here's the official OpenAI Python SDK calling Opus 5.5 on your plan:
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(
base_url="https://api.plan2api.com/v1",
api_key="p2a_...",
)
reply = client.chat.completions.create(
model="claude/claude-opus-5-5",
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Summarize this changelog in three bullets."}],
)
print(reply.choices[0].message.content)Use the AI subscriptions you already pay for as one OpenAI-compatible API key.
- Free: 1 subscription, 50 requests a day, no card
- Pro: $12 a month
FAQ
Is Claude Max cheaper than the API?
For heavy daily use, often yes. A steady 1M input and 200K output tokens a day costs $240 per 30 days on Opus 5.5 at API list prices and $600 on Fable 5.1, against $100 or $200 for Max. Plan limits have no published token counts, though, so check Settings > Usage to see whether your workload fits.
Does Claude Pro include API access?
No. Anthropic's help center states that the Pro plan does not include API usage through the Claude Console. Max 5x and Max 20x include $100 and $200 a month in Claude API credits, and Team plans get pooled per-seat credits.
Do Max API credits work in Claude Code?
No. Claude Code runs on your plan's usage limits, while the monthly API credits cover the Claude API, Claude Managed Agents, the Claude Agent SDK, and the Console playground. If an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set, Claude Code bills that key at API rates instead of using your plan.
What happens when I hit a Claude plan limit?
You can wait for the 5-hour or weekly limit to reset, move to a higher plan, or on paid plans turn on usage credits to keep working at standard API rates. Settings > Usage shows your current progress and reset times.
Can I use my Claude plan for an app my customers use?
No. Anthropic's Claude Code legal page says third-party developers may not route requests through Free, Pro, or Max plan credentials on behalf of their users, and should use API keys from the Claude Console or a supported cloud provider.
Can I call my Claude subscription from my own code?
Yes, through Plan2API, which gives you an OpenAI-compatible p2a_ key for 9 Claude models on your own Pro or Max plan, free for 50 chat requests a day. It sends only your own requests through your own account, and any account risk stays with you.
